Lot Title: Discovery Note - 1882 Serial Number 1 $5 Brown Back - Cherryvale, KS Charter #3277 - VF/margin split
Lot Number: 12
Description: The First National Bank of Cherryvale, Kansas. A stunning discovery that makes its way into the census for the first time, here is serial number 1 off of Cherryvale, just retrieved from an old-time cash-value hoard recently unearthed by Scotsman. Besides the fabulous, first appearance to the market of this $5 national, the note possesses highly appealing properties, such as great signatures, lovely centering, and good paper for only the VF level. The cataloger mentions some minor edge splits that perhaps should be repaired for the posterity of the note, but no pinholes or other problems are apparent. The First National Bank of Cherryvale began operations in 1884 and issued only three types of large notes under one title, including the 1882 brown-back issues of $5, $10 and $20 denominations. Total output from the bank was a minuscule $39,000 in national currency, with an emission period of only twelve years. Records show 605 sheets of the $5 denomination, with four notes per sheet indicating 2420 possible notes, total. The present example, so rare and precious, represents the unusual selection of paper currency for the Scotsman Cataloger's Choice Award for reasons obvious and readily apparent to all collectors of marquee nationals.
