Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1821 PCGS AU details/cleaned
Lot Number: 835
Description: Browning-3 has star-7 pointing to the top edge of the headband, and on the reverse, the easiest pickup point includes the tiny, raised die-rust dots between "2" and the leaf above. This pair of dies was used to strike some fascinating and extremely rare proof examples, and perhaps such dramatic use of the dies helped create the crack now seen ejecting from either side of the twelfth star, but even the proof strikings show the same bar-like clash marks beneath Liberty's ear. Interesting, yes? PCGS declares this strongly detailed example to have been "cleaned", but a pessimist might guess it was very carefully and lightly polished, in part to help eradicate a random scratch in the obverse left field, then professionally retoned to the current not-so-offensive appearance.
