Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1888 PCGS PR-65 CACCAC
Lot Number: 771
Description: Sort of an "ugly duckling", the tonal patter will greatly appeal to some collectors who prefer a bit of the unusual, but will turn off others for the very same reasons. Deeply permeated, molten amber-gold layers the entire surface, but a curiously broad, blocky pattern of dusky orange lies diagonally across the obverse. 1888 is one the dates in the Liberty nickel series for which it is nearly impossible to discern nicer circulation strikes from true proofs, and for what it's worth, the cataloger questions PCGS's "proof" assessment of this one, as the rims are simply not squared off at all, and virtually no cameo effect can be seen on either side.
