Lot Title: 1795 Plain Edge NGC VF-25 BN
Lot Number: 695
Description: Sheldon-76b, with "5" embedded in the bottom edge of the bust and ONE CENT placed high within the wreath. Pride of ownership is an inevitable consequence of obtaining such a splendid type large-cent, especially one that has as much to offer as the present high-quality example. Exquisite caramel-brown color instantly formalizes the demeanor, which as close to ideal as one can imagine in terms of preservation at a middle level grade. The entire surface features smooth, unimprovable texture and freedom from marks, with the only barely notable exception being perhaps a couple or so hairlines at the obverse lower left. The coin was struck about five percent off center, favoring northwest as viewed from the obverse, and therefore, the lower right dentils are lengthy while the upper left shows no rim at all, the converse being true of the reverse. It is true that S-76b is one of the most common early die-marriages (R.1), and likewise, examples may be readily located through the upper circulated grades, but quality like this, in today's market, just doesn't come around very often. It's in cases like this that nomination for the Scotsman Cataloger's Choice Award makes perfect sense.
