Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1794, as described
Lot Number: 678
Description: Cohen-8, R.5 has retained its status as a rare die-marriage as no significant quantities have been located within hoards or collections within the past few decades of avid searching by enthusiasts. Attribution of C-8 begins with the obverse, where the point of "4" nearly touches the bottom edge of the portrait while "1" is comparatively low, and the peak of the hair terminates beneath the bottom right serif of "R". On the reverse, there is a small die-crack from the top of the second "T" in STATES that extends to the rim (it becomes more prominent in later die-states), and neighboring leaves at the far right side of the wreath respectively terminate beneath the centers of "O" and "F". The planchet possesses terrific color and even a reasonably smooth visual impression at first glance, and this proves to be true of the reverse even under magnification. However, the obverse is positively strewn with what appear to be tiny, linear planchet laminations that rain down in prolific number over the obverse. The date and LIBERTY remain prominently visible, but on the reverse, only TED STATES OF AM may be seen.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
