Lot Title: 1889-S NGC MS-63+, Saddle Ridge Hoard
Lot Number: 299
Description: 2 graded MS-63+, 44 higher at NGC. Attributed to the "Saddle Ridge Collection", with the fancy presentation box therefore included. One of the more available double-eagles from the decade of the 1880s, 1889-S nevertheless faces limited availability above the "choice mint-state level". Hands-down, bidders will glance once at this double-eagle and have the immediate impression that it has been conservatively graded at only MS-63+. Albeit, the surface has been conserved, as was required of many coins emanating from the Saddle Ridge Hoard, yet the job was so skillfully executed that both sides now display absolutely stunning, cartwheeling bands of luster, and bombastic eye-appeal, thereby. Practically no contact marks can be found on the cheek, and the fields display little besides a few isolated, exceedingly light abrasions. Careful examination will allow the observer to find some subtle, faint shifts in surface texture from which encrustation was removed, but this appears only in very limited expanse, generally lining up against minute design elements (for example, a very small abraded area at left of the reverse, outside of PLURIB).
