Lot Title: 1909-S PCGS MS-65
Lot Number: 266
Description: 26 graded MS-65, 7 higher at PCGS. Prior to the discovery of small hoards of uncirculated examples in the 1970s and early 1980s, the 1909-S was deemed an extremely rare date within the Indian gold eagle series, and fewer than a handful of true mint-state examples were known until then. Even today, it remains a highly elusive date at the "Gem" level, especially when properly so-graded, as is the case here. Thorough examination of the surface reveals a single minuscule tick delicately positioned atop Liberty's cheek, and a few minute disturbances at the eagle's shoulder and upper neck. As is typical of most San Francisco emissions of this era, the coin offers decidedly sharp delineation throughout, and outstanding, soft granite-textured luster that swirls around the portrait with multiple, curved bands of radiance.
