Description: Mintage: 89,678. 39 graded AU-53, 89 higher at PCGS. Charlotte type collectors frequently gravitate toward 1853-D as the ideal choice given a fair survival rate from the original, ample mintage. Still, the population report indicates a coin that muddles toward some scarcity in the better near-mint grades. Central features are rather firmly impressed, although as always, the eagle's details are somewhat blunt and thickly defined, a curious characteristic of these antebellum gold coins. While evidence of light cleaning can be seen on either side, the golden color tunes in nicely with decent, vintage greyish sheen.
