Lot Title: 1810 Large Date, Large 5 PCGS MS-61
Lot Number: 204
Description: M. Diatom Collection. Bass-Dannreuther 4 might be identified by the very close proximity of the final star to the curl left, and on the reverse, the tip of the flag of "5" points directly at the bottom most tip of an arrow's feather. This variety has been represented by a couple of extraordinary examples known, including an astounding NGC MS-66 that the cataloger saw in an auction ten years ago, but for the collector who does not possess hopelessly inexhaustible financial resources, the present MS-61 offers an excellent opportunity to fulfill a difficult type representation. Unlike the aforementioned near-specimen-caliber superb Gem, the present coin shows a more typical strike that misses absolute precision at the eagle's talons and at the ends of the arrow feathers, yet the hair curls on the obverse all seem more or less completely delineated. Delicate ruby-yellow toning clings to the high points, highly suggestive of the cabinet friction nearly always seen for these desirable early gold coins. No adjustment marks may be found, and PCGS likely limited the grade simply due to a number of tiny vague luster grazes that are present due to common storage and handling in the past.
