Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1943-S Goiter FS-401 PCGS MS-64
Lot Number: 841
Description: FS-401 is a strange, grotesque variety for which Washington's portrait has become distended and featureless toward the left due to vastly excessive polishing of the die. In decades past, such examples would have been discounted as having inferior features, but with the realization that such treasures as the three-legged buffalo nickel, and 1922 "plain" cent are the result of similar mint imperfections, it is now in vogue to pursue such varieties. Perhaps some day, a "halter top" variety will be found for the Saint-Gaudens series.
