Lot Title: 1859-S PCGS AU-53 (shield)
Lot Number: 804
Description: Zodiac Consignment. 1 graded AU-53, 2 higher at PCGS (both AU-55). NGC reports a single AU-55 and two AU-58 examples, affirming the fact that the 1859-S is an exceedingly rare coin in about-uncirculated grades, and no mint-state example has ever been seen at either major grading service.

Disregarding the "splitting of hairs" between a side-by-side comparison of all the AU-53 to AU-58 examples known, the present quarter would surely find a place among the finest handful of pieces. Obverse luster remains unexpectedly strong for the grade, suffused by pleasant, balmy orange-grey toning and consistently appealing cartwheel effect. Remnants of luster on the reverse align more closely with expectations, as there are scant hints of the revolving action, although a strong, pinpoint lamp will reveal some nice flowline texture in the fields. One might very well expect to see the coin graded AU-55, but chances are that a small gathering of contact abrasions in obverse lower right field tempered the graders' enthusiasm ever so slightly. No matter how you look at it, a key date of this caliber, with this much detail, and in "the right" PCGS grade should motivate an aggressive sale in today's auction.
