Lot Title: 1804 13 Stars Reverse PCGS XF-40
Lot Number: 753
Description: Zodiac Consignment. 1 graded XF-40, 5 higher (none above AU-53) at PCGS. The NGC population is substantially more conservative, showing no coins above XF-45. JR-1, R.5 matches the PCGS-denoted "13 stars reverse" with an obverse that has the first star definitely touching "1" in the date. The only other pair of dies struck the "14 stars reverse", making attribution a snap, and Redbook collectors find themselves needing an example of each to satisfy their early dime requirements.

Substantial plumage remains visible on the reverse, such that the only weakness within the eagle's wings occurs off toward the upper right, where the dies tend to produce the weakest definition for JR-1. E PLURIBUS UNUM remains almost entirely present, and shield lines are 100% fully delineated. Turning to the obverse, one finds that the stars all stand away from the rim, whereas in grades below XF, these details tend to merge quickly. Unanticipated, pale grey luster manages to remain present on both sides, with some sweeping effect actually still visible within the obverse fields. One can almost "feel" an XF-45 grade, but closer inspection suggests a few minor conditions that probably limit potential. A pair of tiny scrapes barely nick the first obverse star, and a minor hairline mark may be found on either side. Still, in aggregate, these are rather unimportant for such a difficult, early dime.
