Lot Title: 1884-S PCGS MS-61
Lot Number: 477
Description: Scottie Earls Collection. 108 graded MS-61, 198 higher at PCGS. A seemingly endless supply of AU examples exist for 1884-S, but being a famous grade-rarity within the series, the date instantly becomes a key as soon as it crosses over the mint-state threshold. Furthermore, it seems to have been one of the most indifferently produced and/or stored issues since most seen are dull and unexciting. Not so here. On the contrary, the vivid, bright luster and gorgeous toning would elevate even the most ordinary date to lofty aesthetic heights. Indeed, this dollar possesses unusually nice, bouncy luster, and both sides are framed in beautiful album toning that incorporates crimson-gold, midnight blue and cinnamon colors. Sharpness looks typical for 1884-S, showing modest softness over the ear, but relatively strong presence overall. The only grade-limiting factors must be a few, modest abrasions in the obverse left field, but this is not enough to prevent assignment of the Scotsman Cataloger's Choice Award.
