Lot Title: 1838 Gobrecht dollar J-85 Restrike PCGS PR-63 CACCAC
Lot Number: 356
Description: Zodiac Consignment. 2 graded PR-63, 4 higher at PCGS. Judd-85, R7+, incorporates a reverse with no stars in the field, and Liberty's head is struck exactly opposite "N" in ONE on the reverse (die alignment III). The PCGS slab denotes correct attribution. Although few collectors are likely to accumulate more than one Gobrecht dollars for type purposes, it is certainly worth noting that the Judd-85 is especially rare, and one might as well acquire something "special" during the hunt for a suitable example. For the researcher attempting to establish provenance, the cataloger wishes to mention a tiny, curly strike-through equidistantly placed beneath and between "F A" on the reverse.

PCGS has offered the opinion of Choice Proof (PR-63), which is very much what the initial impression agrees with upon first encounter. Almost entirely brilliant beneath a fragile layer of vanilla-beige and ice-blue iridescence, a closer inspection reveals light hairlines, entirely in compliance with expectations of the grade. One might assume that any pattern of such low emission should be well struck, although that is not always the case. Thankfully, this silver dollar features extravagant detailing, with the merest touch of softness at two curls on Liberty's head and at her big toe.
