Lot Title: 1930-S PCGS MS-63 CACCAC
Lot Number: 354
Description: Desert Gems Consignment. The 1930-S $20 Saint-Gaudens was one of the final issues minted before Executive Order #6102 halted all gold coin production in 1933. A tiny mintage of only 74,000 pieces were struck and only a few hundred of those survived the great meltdowns of the 1930s. Trickling down to today, a mere fraction of those survived, and estimates place the extant population at fewer than sixty pieces. Of the collectable double-eagles from the final period of Great Depression production, i.e. 1929-1932, and following the run of common earlier dates, collectors rank 1930-S the premier rarity, and the third key to the entire collectable series behind only 1921 and 1927-D. Interestingly, virtually all appear to have survived in mint-state, but a choice example does not come up for sale very often.

This particular specimen is certified MS-63 by PCGS and seem more than deserving of the grade, to the acquiescence of CAC. Intense luster spreads rapidly and freely over the surface, which still seems to possess original patina. With no major distractions, quality seems to slightly exceed expectations of MS-63, although a tiny defect rests a bit left of the torch. As discussed, 1930-S examples are almost always found in mint-state, and some do exceed the grade offered here. But it is also true that at any given time, very few find their way to the market, and this might prove to be the best one can hope for at the current time.
