Description: Desert Gems Consignment. 17 graded MS-64, 11 higher at PCGS. Once considered an extreme rarity within the double-eagle series, the 1927-S has seen a few dozen examples come back to the market over the last thirty years, yet the population figures on the books of NGC (and PCGS) affirm that it remains a semi-key of esteemed status. Fewer than a dozen examples have achieved the "gem" level at NGC, placing this outstanding quality specimen right in the neighborhood of the finest examples available. The collector who acquires such a rarity has taken a serious step into completing a world-class collection of Saint-Gaudens double-eagles.

Philadelphia issues for 1927 frequently serve as type due to their unfailing high quality, yet the San Francisco emission is about on par in terms of production aesthetics. This example features utterly comparable windmill luster, and the same type of ideal medium-gold color of any mother-mint example. Furthermore, the dies realized virtually full sharpness, as Liberty's face displays easily 90% or more of the maximum possible detail, and each window has been individually sculpted for the capital building's rotunda. Perhaps three oblong coin-to-coin nicks may be found on the torso, and these undoubtedly form the basis of the NGC grade, as there are simply no other notable contact marks on this side, while a couple of ticks on the reverse are even smaller by comparison.
