Description: Desert Gems Consignment. Mintage: 528,500. 22 graded MS-62, 17 higher at PCGS. The 1921 Saint-Gaudens double eagle once ranked among the great rarities in U.S. numismatics, as collectors in the 1940s believed that only a handful still existed. The rarity belied a fairly proficient emission of over half a million pieces, which implies heavy melting of the issue nearly a decade in front of the gold recall. Estimates today of the extant population suggest 150 and 175 pieces, and because it was never a hoarded date, the majority have seen light circulation, or improper handling in the case of basic Unc examples. Because of its minimal remaining population, this coin is a true rarity that seldom comes up for auction in any grade, let alone in Uncirculated condition.

PCGS has deemed that this specimen stumbles just shy of the Choice Uncirculated benchmark and has certified it as grading MS-62. Contrary to a typically bagmarked example, this particular jewel displays very few ticks given its numeric grade, and boasts plenty of luster on both the obverse and reverse. Excellent medium-gold witnesses splashes of orange coloration over portions of the surfaces, yielding an extremely pleasant overall appearance.
