Lot Title: 1892 World's Columbian Expo medal, Liberty Head high-relief E-101, Gilt 90mm NGC PF-65
Lot Number: 1014
Description: Eglit-101 features a "Liberty head" motif on the obverse, somewhat reminiscent of the Morgan dollar portrait, backed by the delightful "Columbus landing" motif on the reverse. These large, impressive medals were typically struck in white metal or aluminum (and very rarely, in silver), while any gilt example is also much scarcer than a non-plated example. This particular example displays a classic look for the type, very nearly showing fully prooflike character, and certainly enjoying the extremely high relief intended by the designer. Unlike the typical gilt example, which may show thinning of the gold plate on the highpoints due to friction during storage, the gold appears to be entirely intact for this remarkable gem.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
