Lot Title: 1904-S PCGS MS-64 (green label) CACCAC
Lot Number: 913
Description: Shawl Consignment. 12 graded MS-64, 10 higher at PCGS. Disregarding varieties, 1904-S almost certainly represents THE key to a choice-uncirculated or better set of Barber half-dollars. A mint-state example at any level automatically qualifies as a prize of nearly inestimable prestige, and the present very choice specimen possesses all the requisite technical cachet, plus the benefit of excellent eye-appeal -- not a given for series examples at the grade. Liberty's portrait presents as being completely abrasion-free save a cluster of three reed marks at the peak of the cap. One may find similar abrasions on certified gem examples of more common dates and they would not necessarily be sufficient to deny a gem grade all by themselves. That said, the vibrancy of the luster, while plenty energetic on the reverse, possibly lacks the "pizzazz" on the obverse that would put the grade "over the top" for gem consideration. Fortunately, astute collectors recognize that technical consideration is only one part of the equation. Luxurious slate-grey and sage-green iridescence spans virtually the entire obverse, while the reverse shows surprisingly different color, featuring neon lilac-violet around a somewhat irregular salmon-crimson central portion. Add to that a considerably detailed strike and one has described just about the best possible quality for the MS-64 grade level.
