Lot Title: 1900-O NGC MS-63
Lot Number: 899
Description: Shawl Consignment. 6 graded MS-63, 15 higher at NGC. Collectors of the Barber half-dollar series absolutely must take a long, hard look at this 1900-O representative. The date is notorious for poorly struck examples, and even the record-setting Norweb/Duckor specimen, graded MS-66(!) and questionably alluded to as a possible "presentation specimen", possessed almost laughably shallow definition throughout the eagle's motif. That is simply NOT the case here. On the contrary, if one were not aware of the New Orleans mintmark were showing on the reverse, it would be easy to mistake this as a high-quality Philadelphia strike. Absolutely every curl above the headband shows precise delineation and the merest trifle of softness shows at the three visible arrow nocks on the reverse. Every single obverse star shows full points and complete relief, including the twelfth, which frequently lacks detail on many dates in the series.

All things being equal, the NGC grade of MS-63 might draw some criticism due to quite a few marks on the portrait, including what appear to be slide marks on the neck. A scribble of abrasions pepper the obverse upper right field. But remember, folks, this is a 1900-O and the superior strike deserves to overturn some arguments against grading liberties. Furthermore, this is a somewhat flashy example that may have followed early fully prooflike examples off the dies, and the arm's length eye-appeal is highly acceptable. Closer examination shows widespread strike doubling of the reverse, which is another characteristic sometimes noted for the date.
