Lot Title: 1899-S PCGS MS-63 (green label)
Lot Number: 897
Description: Shawl Consignment. 15 graded MS-63, 41 higher at PCGS. The PCGS census may not instantly place the 1899-S into the elite rarity category of, say, 1901-S, but it is certainly a challenging acquisition at the choice-uncirculated level. Turning first to the reverse of the present example, that side appears to be a shoe-in for the gem level, as it absolutely spangles with blazing platinum-butterscotch luster, and shows spectacular definition beneath the marvelous vibrancy. So, this side may be excluded from any list of grade-limiting factors. The obverse seems to display no major grade-limiting factors at first glance, either, until one discovers a small scrape on the upper lip. The luster is not quite as strong on this side, and may be slightly muted by roving apricot-gold patina and lilac-grey. Perhaps the most distracting aspect of all to some viewers will be a tiny black hair adhering to Liberty's upper cheek - apparently, PCGS graders didn't wear hair nets twenty years ago.
