Lot Title: 1861 $2.50 Clark Gruber PCGS AU-58 CACCAC
Lot Number: 320
Description: MAGA Collection. Kagin-5. 8 graded AU-58, 12 higher at PCGS. Records indicate that the Clark-Gruber company (1859-65) produced gold ingots in 1862, but the opening year of the Civil War saw their final production of struck gold coins. In consequence of their dwindling emissions, the 1861-dated quarter eagle is far scarcer than the prior 1860-dated pieces of the "2 1/2 D".

PCGS has assigned a grade of AU-58, CAC concurs, and the cataloger also acclaims that assessment, as this is a strictly and honestly handled example that displays no actual wear, but merely a hint of butterscotch friction on the broad high-relief expanses, such as the cheek, top of the hair bun, and the eagle's brown and beak point. Exactly one contact mark can be found, lurking at the upper reverse under "RU". The gorgeous greenish-golden surface iridescence takes on a slight olive tinge at some viewing angles. It is quite assuredly safe to say that this faintly handled AU-58 will prove more desirable than a basal mint-state example showing numerous contact marks.

The cataloger very rarely chooses to quote "values" shown in various commercial listings for competitive coins. But as of this writing (4/8/2017), the Eliasberg-Flannagan example, graded only AU-50 and significantly less attractive, is being publicly offered at $9,400. That same high bid would be a bargain for this exceptional example.
