Lot Title: 1852 $10 Wass Molitor, Large Head PCGS VF-30
Lot Number: 318
Description: MAGA Collection. Kagin-4 (R.5) has a wide, uneven date and a pointed bust. A considerable number of small contact marks somehow plays up the humble appeal of this famous private gold issue, struck in plentiful quantities, but subject later to considerable attrition. Contemporary owners of most of the coins would have, at some point, turned them in for recoinage into official Federal issues after the new San Francisco mint opened in 1854. Judging by the rather bold detail (for VF-30), one suspects PCGS saw this as an XF example, but silently netted off a few points due to the many circulation ticks. Certainly, it is a difficult issue to grade accurately given the inconsistent quality of the dies. Mustard gold overall with some copper inflections here and there.
