Lot #: Go
Lot Title: (1831-34) C. Bechtler, 30 Gr. NGC MS-61
Lot Number: 316
Description: Kagin-1, R.4. 7 graded MS-61, 5 higher at NGC. The Bechtler pieces were the first 'gold dollars' struck on United States soil, addressing a need for the denomination that would not be addressed officially until 1849. All examples in any mint state grade are very elusive and command strong interest among collectors. The 'bulging' effect observed on the '30.G.' side is a characteristic of the convex die, and all examples seen by the cataloger show rotation between the two dies (assuming they were meant to be struck in alignment). A handful of examples graded higher at NGC (all are MS-62s; NGC shows nothing finer at MS-63 or higher), yet few should be able to challenge the highly appealing vintage royal-gold preservation of this unmarked example. An irregular lamination lurking beneath 'ONE' serves as a pedigree marker.
