Description: Mintage: 27,021. 20 graded AU-55, 34 higher at NGC. 1839/8, the so-called overdate, features prominent recutting of the four digits in the date such that the last appears to be 9/8. Being much scarcer as a date than, say, 1835, the 1839 issue seldom sees use as type, although this choice AU example features a fair portion of original luster and even, albeit somewhat pale golden pallor. A number of modest scrapes and vague ticks are perfectly in keeping with the grade for a softer gold coin of this vintage, and modest sharpness at the obverse stars is counterbalanced by very decent central definition through Liberty's tresses.
