Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1884 NGC PR-64 CAMEO CACCAC
Lot Number: 179
Description: Watertown Collection. Breen-6107 "doubled date". Mintage: 1006. 9 graded PF-64 CAM, 36 higher at NGC. Initial punching of the "1" and "8 in the date were clearly too low in the field, resulting in the repunching of the corrected digits, with only faint remnants now visible of the initial error. Prior proof emissions of the gold dollar series were much, much lower from 1859 through 1883, yet the 1884 and subsequent dates all remain scarce as proof strikings. Fortunately, they tend to be exceptionally attractive pieces, as this near-miss "gem" clearly denotes. Crystalline reflectivity in the fields refracts and bends incoming light with incomparable effect, and the frosted motifs seem to glow and blossom with their own inner energy. The reverse appears to grade fully gem without disclaimer, and only the most fleeting of faint hairlines dash across the obverse. Serving as an excellent pedigree marker, a scrabble of threadlike lint marks appear just right of the portrait.
