Lot Title: 1873 fourteen-coin United States Proof Set, all NGC
Lot Number: 1090
Description: References cite the proof mintage for the 1873 "with arrows" quarter as 500 pieces, the nadir for the various denominations that figure into a complete set of fourteen pieces. Thus, even if there had been no attrition for this particular issue, a complete set must be considered quite an acquisition. Each piece included for this particular set, hand-assembled by the consignor, has been encapsulated by NGC.

Cent (PF-60/altered color). The appearance very nearly matches that of a fully mint red proof. Indeed, all that leads one to question the color is the way it is so exactingly and evenly set on the surface.

2-cent (PF-60/cleaned). Exactingly struck, each side displays exceptional sharpness, detracted by only modest hairlines.

3-cent silver (PF-62). Steady bone-white brilliance belies a few inscrutable hairlines, and some cameo contrast.

3-cent nickel (PF-64 CAM). Several virtually invisible hairline scratches cross the portrait, which, like the other motifs, shows, indisputable cameo frost.

5-cent nickel PF-65. Gentle chartreuse-grey drapes over portions of a nearly impeccable surface.

Half-dime (PF-64 CAM). Possibly DCAM on the obverse, both sides show nearly full brilliance and superb sharpness.

Dime “no arrows” (PF-63 CAM). The obverse appears to easily meet DCAM standards, but is mated to a reverse that likely makes the designation just barely. A brilliant, flashy white example with exceptional aesthetics for the grade.

Dime “with arrows” (PF-63). Bone-grey overall, each side offers legitimate contrast, although fields probably require additional reflectivity to qualify for any special designation. A tiny lint mark protrudes from Liberty’s left (observed) elbow.

Quarter “no arrows” (PF-65 CAM). Stunning brilliance and exquisite definition. A nearly blistering off-white gem with outstanding eye-appeal.

Quarter “with arrows” (PF-61). Light golden-beige douses the entire surface, but does not impede strong brilliance that seems to demand a cameo designation.

Half-dollar “no arrows” (incorrectly designated “arrows” on the slab) (PF-61 CAM). Obvious strong contrast with thick texture layered over brilliant fields that show minor circular hairlines.

Half-dollar “with arrows” (PF-60/cleaned). Somewhat dull with bone-grey patina and light contrast.

Seated Liberty dollar (PF-60/cleaned). Unexpectedly stunning with deeply mirrored obverse fields and obvious cameo. Overly deep hairlines crisscross the reverse upper field.

Trade dollar (PF-61 CAM). Astonishingly sharp, with a reverse that seems to have particularly strong contrast.
