Description:	Ben Bishop Collection. The reverse for each member of this grouping displays a rendition of the official logo of the 1980 Olympics, while obverse motifs represent various athletic pursuits of the games. All together, this group represents a complete assemblage of commemorative coins, struck in silver and brass. The Winter games took place in Lake Placid, New York, while the summer games was held in Moscow, Russia. Soviet troops began the Russian invasion of Afghanistan December 27 and 28, 1979, mere months before the opening ceremony of the Olympics on July 19. United States president Jimmy Carter issued an ultimatum on January 20th stating that U.S. would boycott the games if the Soviet troops did not withdraw within a month. As history shows, that is indeed what happened, and sixty-five additional nations declined to participate in the 1980 summer games.
